M.F. Burrowes: A songwriter with a World View
Millard Fillmore Burrowes, known mostly for his message and an incredible world view, shares a common birthplace with Jamaican national hero, the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and several other cultural and musical giants, including Bob Marley, the musical icon from Calderwood in St. Ann’s, Jamaica.
Burrowes preaches truth and compassion through his music. At the tender age of five, Burrowes was singing along to songs on the radio and in church, as he grew older his musical interests steered away from the local church to reggae and songwriting.
Burrowes’ first two songs, Sweet Angel and Anniversary Day, garnered two awards and a U.S. Library of Congress copyright. He subsequently recorded numerous reggae singles, earning him critical acclaim from press and radio in the U.S., Europe, Africa (Ethiopia) and the Caribbean.
Quite early in the business, realizing that the voice of the people was finally being heard in his messages, Burrowes made a conscious decision to become a harbinger of the message of compassion and brotherly love. He has sought ot bring about change
by way of the poignant lyrics he has used as weapons against “downpressors.”
Burrowes’ musical repertoire is packaged in a montage of political, social and economic commentary, with early influences from Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Burning Spear, Max Romeo and several other Jamaican icons.
With a deep conviction to contribute to humanity by way of lessons of spirituality and brotherly love, Burrowes addresses a variety of issues in his lyrics, at the same time offering solutions and encouragement to people in distress.
Over the past 15 years, M.F. Burrowes has recorded and produced seven albums on his personal label, Decoda & Kids Records. Today he has overcome many obstacles on his journey towards international recognition. Wherever music is played or staged in his field, fans of all races and cultural backgrounds who love his music wait to see him on stage.
Burrowes’ first CD album, Tribute to the World, was released in January 1997. Two videos were produced as an addition to this album, Tribute to the World and Their System Fails Them. As a result, album sales soared to 14,000 copies. His second
album, Africa on My Mind, followed in 1998. Attached to this album is a video entitled, I want to Close My Page on You. That album also sold over 14,000 copies.
His third album, The Struggle Goes on to Set My People Free, was released in 2004, with a video entitled, I Know Jah. The album sold over 3,000 copies. The fourth album released in 2005, We Are Concerned, with a video produced with the same name, sold over 2,000 copies.
Burrowes’ fifth album, One Man Protesting the World, was released in 2005, featuring an old video called She Rules, which was the very first song he ever recorded. This album sold over 3,000 copies. His sixth album, Tribute to Ethiopian Spiritual Standards, was released in 2007, from which a video, entitled I Have Been Up There, was made. This album sold over 3,000 copies.
His seventh album, We Are at the Crossroads, was released in 2008. On this album he did two songs supporting President Obama’s campaign. The songs were Why They Call Him Radical and We Are at the Crossroads. Videos of these songs were attached to the album, which sold over 3,000 copies. Former President Obama sent Mr. Burrowes two letters of appreciation for the early support on his campaign, after he received the videos.
Mr. Burrowes sold all these albums by his own self-promotion on the streets of New York City. He now has two more albums completed which have not been released.
Mr. Burrowes is also the author of a book, The Ancient Rastafari Herbs & Natural Ways. First published in 2019 he has sold over 2,500 copies, also by his own self-promotion.
M.F. Burrowes has set a standard that will take him and all of us to higher ground.
